Wow. As soon I wrote the last post, I turned on the TV. I keep the TV channel in my office on the Omaha NBC station and listen to it periodically throughout the day. Well, today my eyes have been glued to it after a 19-year-old boy (Robert A. Hawkins) opened fire with a rifle in the Von Maur department store inside Westroads Mall, killing nine people (himself included), wounding at least five others (2 still in critical condition) and sending hundreds of people into terrified panic.
I was prepared to see full coverage of President George W. Bush who visited Omaha today, and I wish that would have been the top news of the day.
My mother called minutes after I turned on the TV to make sure I wasn’t in Omaha as I frequent there quite a bit with my kids’ doctor appointments, to travel to/from the airport, and we have relatives there. And I usually always make it a point to stop at Westroads Mall (as I’ve written about several times before) while in Omaha as that is my favorite place to shop.
I reassured my mom that I was at home, but maybe she should call my brother, who works in Omaha, who is also fine. How scary to think that we could have been there. People we know could have been there. How sad that innocent victims have had their lives taken by some kid that left a suicide note saying he would be “famous” after today. Did he want to be the next Charles Starkweather? My thoughts and prayers are with all the families of the deceased. May they rest in peace.
